Abstract
The essay addresses the topic of the management of people with mental health disorders when accessing the emergency room, issue that persists both in Italy and in the rest of the world. The dissertation is divided into three main chapters, within which different aspects of nursing activities are examined. Methods and tools for the patient's initial assessment and management are presented as well as the risk factors for both health care staff and patients. The last chapter presents the professionals specialised in the approach and processing of the most suitable care pathway for people with mental health disorders. Several guidelines have been consulted such as those of the American Psychiatric Association, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), in addition to those proposed by the World Health Organisation. The database, which has been used predominantly is PubMed but other websites such as that of the Case Management Society of America have been referred to for integrating the information given by the various selected articles. The keywords used are: mental health, nursing care, emergency room, mental disorders and psychiatric nursing.
