Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is a condition of impaired renal function in which a progressive and irreversible loss of renal function occurs, up to the onset of serious pathological conditions requiring the use of renal function replacement treatments such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation. The choice of treatment depends on several factors, both clinical and related to the patient's lifestyle. Peritoneal dialysis is a beneficial dialysis treatment in terms of autonomy and independence as it can be performed by the patient at home following a training course. Nursing, by virtue of its technical, relational, and educational nature, plays a key role in peritoneal dialysis. The role of the nurse is fundamental in all the phases of the path, as it is responsible for the realization of a continuous care and educational path, which begins in the pre-dialysis phase, continues during practical/theoretical training in disease management and continues at home, researching effective strategies to support the patient in the most complex stages of the disease. Technological innovation using telemedicine, represents a means of support for the realization of a continuous and integrated treatment path that improves outcomes and makes treatment accessible to a wider cohort of patients.
