Abstract
Bronchiectasis is abnormal and irreversible dilatation of the airways. The irreversibility and often progression of bronchial changes makes bronchiectasis a chronic lung disease, which manifests itself with a persistent productive cough and frequent infectious exacerbations. The lack of elasticity of the bronchial wall, due to the loss of lung tissue, is responsible of the development of a chronic inflammatory process of the airways with systemic consequences. A multidisciplinary therapeutic approach involving doctors, nurses and physiotherapists is crucial for the control of the disease and the improvement of the quality of life and to guarantee a holistic assistance. The nurse plays an important role in managing the complications of the disease, such as respiratory infections. Furthermore, the nurse is essential for creating self-management plans for the pathology, which include correct therapeutic education, promotion of a correct lifestyle, assistance during physiotherapy techniques and psycho-social support.
