Abstract

Psychoeducation is a form of specialized education that aims to help people suffering from psychological problems and their families, to better understand the nature of their disorder and how to manage it. The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate the effectiveness of psychoeducation in improving the mental health of caregivers and their adolescent and young adult relatives. The secondary objective of this paper is to understand what role nurses can play in psychoeducational intervention. The following databases were used for bibliographic research: PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL Plus with full text, Medline and Nursing Reference Center Plus. Two research strings were elaborated, one to specify the adolescent age and disease, the other for the nurses and caregiver's role. After a screening activity, 29 articles were selected, on some of them (n=13) a differentiated meta-analysis was developed for caregivers or assisted according to the effectiveness of psychoeducation. A qualitative analysis was carried out for the remaining studies. From our review, it emerges that psychoeducation can be an effective intervention in improving especially patients disease course, reducing the intensity of symptoms, the rate of hospitalization and improving the quality of life and related stress to the disease. Regarding the caregiver's care load, our review did not report exhaustive results, while suggesting that targeted psycho-educational interventions on this important welfare figure generally improve the quality of life and the perception of workload. Our review has shown that the literature on the role of the nurse in psychoeducation is lacking, despite the extensive and continuous care that the nurse carries out not only regarding the sick person but also to his life context.
