Abstract

The elaborated thesis addresses the topic of the nurse's figure in the context of humanitarian aid. The interest in this topic finds its origins in a trip to a low-income country. A literature review, implemented trough bibliographical and websites sources, is what the writing was based on. The witnesses of healthcare professionals, who decided to join this long and complex journey, and the analysis of a project carried out by an association in Madagascar were also of exceptional help. The thesis most scientific part was realized trough files review found on PubMed, using data filters, boolean operators and different keywords such as ''Schistosomias'', ''Infectious Diseases'', ''Leprosy''. These studies and experiences revelead that the figure of the volunteer nurse has distant origins based on ethical principles that, even today, represent cornerstones of the profession itself. Those values, following the example of Florence Nightingale, have allowed the development of numerous non governmental health care organization. Being able to respond to the needs of those people, who live in economically and socially disadvantaged context, is possible and also highly increase life quality and expectation of the ''indigent sick'', as proved through the Drepanocytosis Project. The Care planning carried out for the pediatric population with Drepanocytosis and their family, who share the same pathological, economic, social and cultural conditions, may be a standard reference in the management of this type of patient and in the planning of a personalized plan.
