Abstract

The object of this thesis is the role of the anesthesia nurse within the Operating Block and the nursing assistance that he can offer to the anesthesiologist and to the patient, with attention to the loco-regional anesthesia part and even more to general anesthesia. The first fundamental aspect that emerged is that the nurse within the Operating Block does not only carry out manual work dependent on the anesthetist, but he is a professional, with decision-making and intervention skills. A crucial aspect is also the team collaboration that must exist between all the components, in order to obtain the best possible outcome in terms of health for the patient, job satisfaction and health costs. Another important aspect is that, given the extensive use of general anesthesia, anesthetist and nurses cooperate side by side, which makes it absolutely necessary that the nurse must know every single procedure in order to intervene in case of need; however in Italy, unlike many other European and extra-European countries, the anesthesia nurse is not a precisely recognized figure, and this is due to the lack of specialized training courses that lead to this title. The search for bibliographic sources was carried out through the use of PubMed, MedLine, AORN, ASA, CINAHL databases, using the strings "general anesthesia", "general anesthesia" AND "nursing", "nursing anesthesia care".
