Abstract

Background: This paper deals with the treatment and management of pain and sedation in intensive care, which is considered a highly complex care environment, where one or more vital functions are compromised. Pain, identified as the fifth vital parameter, must be investigated, evaluated and treated effectively. The nurse, to detect the intensity of pain felt by the patient, can use validated evaluation scales, the most used in emergency-urgency is the NRS scale in alert patients, in sedated patients it is necessary to use validated scales for sedated patients such as the BPS. Objective: The objective of this thesis is the study of the literature on the treatment of pain and the effects and monitoring of analgo-sedation in the intensive care unit, identifying the nursing skills and interventions that respond positively to the patients. Materials and Methods: An in-depth research was carried out on updated IT platforms such as Salute.gov; The Official Gazette; PubMEd, Cochrane, Google Scholar; in addition, articles and textbooks were consulted. Conclusions: Regarding the initial goal, different methods, pharmacological and otherwise, were found in the treatment and management of pain and analgo-sedation in intensive care. It can be seen that pharmacological methods are the most used, giving long-term benefits to the client. Nursing pain assessment and non-drug treatments desirable.
