Abstract

Health is defined by the WHO as ‘a state of total physical, mental and social well-being.’ Mental health is therefore an essential part of general health, the impairment of which is almost always accompanied by strong repercussions on aspects of social life. For women, the time of delivery is a very important and delicate phase of life in which she can go against mental health problems, such as the onset of postpartum depression. From the moment a family member gets sick, the entire family unit is involved and imbalances are created that are easily followed by misunderstandings and tensions. However, when the family is properly educated during the care process, it can be an important resource both for the nursing care interventions and for the puerperal women themselves. An important role of the nurse, in this context, is to offer support, educate family members and caregivers about the disease, its manifestations, how to approach the sick family member. The family is also taught how to handle stressful situations, problem solving and how to communicate in the right way. The nurse in the field of health education has a great responsibility: she must be able to act as a mediator between the patient and his household and help the family unit to regain new balances.
