Abstract

The treatment of abdominal pain in an out-of-hospital setting has for years been one of the most debated topics that places nurses at a crossroads: on the one hand the patient's well-being, on the other the perception and conviction on the part of the medical profession that a possible analgesic treatment can mask the symptoms making it difficult to diagnose them at the time of the visit to the emergency room. The context of emergency / out-of-hospital urgency requires the professional employed to have adequate preparation, a good capacity for reasoning and investigation as well as knowledge of procedures and protocols. Hence the need for the nurse, especially in the investigation of abdominal pain, to have a good knowledge of abdominal anatomy and physiology combined with basic notions of semiotics. This bibliographic review aims to examine the efficacy of the pharmacological treatment of acute abdominal pain in the out-of-hospital setting by referring to the guidelines of other countries of the European community and the procedures used in some triages of hospital emergency rooms, in order to demonstrate that the reasons why pain is not treated in an out-of-hospital setting are now obsolete as well as scientifically refuted. Furthermore, the objective is to demonstrate that an extension of the protocol (R.E.R. 2016) already present and inherent in traumatic pain in the out-of-hospital setting can be extended to internal pain and in this case to abdominal pain. Pain is to all intents and purposes considered as a vital parameter and as such must be documented and adequately treated; the nurse, as amply indicated by the code of ethics, takes action according to science, conscience and knowledge to favor the patient's well-being; in light of this, in order to provide effective and efficient help and aimed at "to care"philosophy, the patient must be considered holistically.
