Abstract

The objective of this Thesis Work is to investigate the interventions, potential and actual, implemented by the nurse, in order to prevent or limit the onset of body image disturbance in the patient who has suffered a burn injury. . The scientific articles examined were found through the Pubmed database, analyzed and translated from English. The research shows that the attention paid to the body as the first object involved in presenting oneself to the world crushes individuals under the weight of the "socially desirable image" and contributes to bodily dissatisfaction in subjects with atypical appearance. Therefore, it is highlighted the need of the nurse, as the professional most in contact with the patients, to investigate in the intimacy of their own being the meaning given to the traumatic burn event, in order to favor a holistic care of the patient, that allows the sharing of emotions, self-representations, fears and vulnerabilities and effectively contributes to lightening the burden of trauma. In this panorama, pedagogy acquires a fundamental role, understood as an educational discipline and a support to the nursing staff; education for a new body, implemented in dialogue and active listening to the suffering of others, can represent a promise of help to the patient and constitute a resource aimed at the emotional support of the patient, in order to facilitate the rehabilitation and restructuring of self-identity and dignity. The nurse aims to create a support network that includes health personnel and survivor support figures, both essential in the recovery process and in the constant development of coping strategies necessary to strengthen resilience processes.
