Abstract

Liver transplantation is the only valid therapy for many terminal liver diseases, permitting those who receive it to lead a satisfying and quality life. The onset and evolution of liver-related diseases lead to serious, often disabling complications that require appropriate management. The importance of correct management and the fundamental role of the nurse at all stages of the care process are the main points of this thesis. The first chapter describes what liver transplantation is and what its indications and contraindications are. The second and third chapters explain the role of the nurse in the patient's journey at all stages of the surgical process, considering the psychological component, which often negatively affects patient's compliance, and how the therapeutic alliance is a fundamental tool for improving patient outcomes and life prospects. Nursing care goes beyond clinical practices: information conveyed for proper home management at discharge is of crucial importance. Therapeutic education in this phase aims at providing the patient with the necessary tools to cope and manage daily activities in the best possible way.
