Abstract

Stigma is a social phenomenon that leads anyone whoever is the subject of it to be the victim of stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination. Stigma of mental illness involves a double challenge for patients, on the one hand the person has to face the disease and its implications, on the other hand he has to face the reactions of the public and the effects of this stigmatization. The stigma implies various consequences for the subjects such as decreased t quality of life, inadequate levels of care, a high mortality, etc. This paper investigates the phenomenon surrounding the stigma of mental illness and how it affects the lives of psychiatric patients and how they make the stereotypes that surround them their own. It also goes to examine how in the contexts of care, which instead should be safe places for this type of patient, they are victims of stigmatization by professionals. A look is also taken at possible diagnoses useful for defining objectives and interventions for a care plan aimed at intervening on some effects of self-stigmatization. Finally, activities for reducing stigma targeting the population, patients themselves and healthcare professionals are reported.
