Abstract

Objective of the project: The aim of this study is to investigate the psychological aspect (perceptions and emotions) experienced by the patient during the period of isolation, necessary to reduce the risks, in particular infective, related to the transplant procedure of hematopoietic stem cells resulting from the immunosuppression caused by chemotherapy treatments and by the underlying disease itself. Materials and Methods: This project was conducted through the distribution of validated questionnaires within the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit (BMTU) at the Modena Cancer Center thanks to the collaboration of the ward's staff. The questionnaires were delivered admission into the BMTU and returned upon discharge. The compilation did not require sensitive data and was voluntary. The questionnaires had to be completed at different time points during the hospitalization period (on entry, on the 7th day and on discharge). Results: The STAI questionnaires show an increase in the score from admission to the 7th day and then decrease in the results of discharge. While the H.A.D.S questionnaire highlights a high percentage of mild anxiety states throughout the course of care and a low percentage of moderate anxiety states. Conclusions: The project highlighted how anxiety and / or depression states can arise following entry into the BMTU due to fears about the course of the disease / stem cell transplant outcome and how these anxious / depressive states are attenuated after transplantation and upon discharge.
