Abstract

The NEXUS PROJECT’s rationale stems from the need to increase patient safety and the effectiveness of the services provided by developing training courses focused on enhancing non-technical skills (NTS). The research design stems from the need to explore the feelings, impressions and gratification experienced at the end of the NEXUS course. The study, a monocentric qualitative phenomenological and descriptive eidetic study, was conducted by subjecting a sample of SET 118 Modena Emergency employees to a semi-structured interview. All subjects who gave their consent to participate in the research were consecutively enrolled from among all those who attended the course. Subsequently, individuals were asked to indicate additional subjects who might have provided other topics or different points of view, by snowball sampling. The "Colaizzi" method was chosen to guide the analysis of the interviews. In addition, participants filled in a questionnaire with the aim of describing the characteristics of the study population and, finally, convergent triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data was applied in order to interpret them with side-by-side comparison. The qualitative survey revealed a high level of perceived satisfaction related to multiple themes that emerged such as Teamwork, Progress, Emotions, Training and Communication. The analysis allowed the emergence of multiple hypotheses concerning the benefits and the need to implement training courses focused on the development of NTS; in particular, the development of the human factor was associated with the perception of an improvement in performance, team management, communication processes, decision-making processes, safety of the services provided, prevention of errors and an improvement in the professional satisfaction perceived by the participants.
