Abstract

In recent decades, organ donation after cardiac death has been reintroduced. This type of organ donation is performed on patients declared dead using Cardiac Criteria, and enabled the number of potential donors to increase. Organ donation after cardiac death is made possible by inserting extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) which allows to maintain a constant blood flow in the patient’s vascular system in order to ensure the correct perfusion of organs. The aim of this thesis is to underline the importance that the nursing role has throughout the whole procedure, from the diagnosis of cardiac death to the organ transplant. Furthermore, this paper will describe all the nursing activities related to the patient care: the procedure directly applied on the patient undergoing ECMO treatment, family assistance, the execution of the organ transplant according to the current guidelines.
