Abstract

Dementia is a chronic degenerative disease that is devastating for sufferers, caregivers and their families and represents a public health challenge. The aim of this thesis is to highlight the negative consequences that caregivers experience when caring for an Alzheimer's patient, through an interview presentation and literature review. The figure of the caregiver is often forgotten or underestimated but, together with the patient, it should be taken care of by the nurse in order to reduce the risk of developing burden, a correlated stress syndrome that can be recognised through the use of appropriate validated instruments and managed with appropriate nursing interventions; taking care of the caregiver and preventing burden also means reducing costs and resources of the health system, since caregivers take care of their loved ones at home. The literature search was carried out on the databases CHINAL, Nursing Reference Centre Plus, PubMed, Google Scholar with the following keywords: Alzheimer's, caregiver, burden, nurse, disease. A caregiver burden assessment tool, the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI), was administered to the caregiver and a semi-structured interview was carried out following the five areas analysed in the CBI, in order to bring out the experiences and perceptions regarding the caregiver's role.
