Abstract

The ElectroCardioGram (ECG) is a simple and quick instrumental examination thanks to which healthcare professionals are able to assess the cardiac function and detect early life-threatening heart disease. Identifying which patients are eligible for an ECG is part of the responsibility of triage nurses, who must carefully analyze both cardiac and non cardiac symptoms presented by patients in the Emergency Room. This paper aims to underscore the importance of role of the triage nurse in the execution of an ECG to identify time-dependent heart disease, first and foremost the acute myocardial infarction. Moreover, given the current state of the COVID19 pandemic, this dissertation aims to explore the possibility that the virus may cause cardiovascular alterations, detectable by electrocardiogram; although there is little scientific evidence about it, a correlation between the SARS-CoV-2 infection and cardiovascular problems such as thrombosis, arrhythmias or heart failure, is not to be excluded, always taking into consideration the pre-existing comorbidities (diabetes, obesity, old age), that play a substantial role in the prognosis.
