Abstract

Epilepsy is a neurological disease that affects the Central Nervous System caused by excessive and hypersynchronous neuronal activity that leads to the onset of epileptic seizures. It is an event that frequently involves the infant population and often arises suddenly, causing agitation and anxiety not only in those who live it but also in the family unit. Depending on the area of the brain involved, the pediatric patient may develop a different clinical manifestation that can expose him to risks, such as trauma and respiratory distress. The diagnosis of this pathology may require the execution of numerous diagnostic tests as it can arise either from a triggering event, such as fever, or from brain problems. By the time epilepsy is diagnosed, the child's quality of life is compromised due to the restrictions that the disease imposes. In addition, patients may be marginalized by society due to the unpredictability of crises, the family may hold on to isolating themselves in their grief and this complicates the acceptance of the disease. For this problem it is important that the family is educated and instructed on the management of epilepsy in their child. This thesis aims to underline the importance of therapeutic family education; furthermore, as a help information tool, a brochure is proposed, written in a simple and simple way, to be delivered to parents that offers useful suggestions on the behavior to adopt during an epileptic seizure as the nurse's task is precisely to provide practical support and psychological support for parents who have to face these problems.
