Abstract
Mental disorders are states of alteration that affect in various ways psychic functions such as cognitive functions, the affective sphere, and consequently the behavior and quality of relationships within society. When the mental disorder affects a member of a family, this also affects family members, with various relational, emotional, but also economic or social repercussions. The paper aims to discuss and understand the complexity of assistance, in particular by family caregivers, towards the patient suffering from mental disorders. In the first chapter an accurate theoretical exposition on the main psychiatric disorders and on the territorial organization of care services has been treated. In the second chapter, the role of the caregiver is defined and in particular the burdens he faces in his care path. In the last chapter, a series of strategies offered by the National Health System to help the caregiver were discussed, including the function of the nurse "case manager" as an intermediary between families and health facilities, the teaching of nursing aimed at families and the continuation of the personalized care path even at home.
