Abstract

Introduction: Aggression and violence toward nursing students during clinical internship is a very common occurrence, and the number of studies addressing this issue is steadily growing. Aim: To identify and document violent assaults experienced by nursing students during the course of clinical internship. Methods: Quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method studies were included. Both English and Italian language published studies were considered, with restrictions on the year of publication, from 2012 to 2022. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Results: The following were analyzed: the prevalence of violence and its risk factors, the characteristics of the aggressor, the hospital and out-of-hospital settings in which violent incidents most frequently occurred, the emotional reactions experienced by students following the violence they experienced, and the type of violent acts that occurred. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained in this systematic review, it is confirmed that violence during clinical internship is a present-day phenomenon among nursing students globally.
