Abstract
Neoplastic pathology requires a holistic treatment approach that considers the physical, psychological, social and spiritual factors of the cancer patient. In fact, in addition to medical care, it is necessary to provide the oncological patient psychological, social and spiritual assistance to counteract the complications of the disease and the impairment of the quality of life of both the patient and his family members. Distress seems to be a frequent factor in the suffering of the cancer patient, consequently, a screening through the use of the distress thermometer (DT) makes it possible to adequately assess and treat the psychological discomfort related to the neoplastic pathology. The nurse plays a central role both in administering the DT and in treating the distress of the person with neoplastic pathology. The final part of the paper describes a case report that has two objectives. The first is linked to the assessment of the distress of a patient in the Modena cancer centre through the use of the distress thermometer; the second concerns the use of information obtained from the DT with the aim of easing the nursing care assessment regarding the person's distress.
