Abstract

The thesis in question aims to investigate the role of Advocacy of the nurse, that is, as a defender, in the assistance to a person suffering from a terminal oncological pathology. The key point of this thesis is to analyze a Case Report drawn from the internship experience at the Department of Oncology. The first chapter illustrates the clinical case which is the starting point for the discussion on the role of nursing advocacy. The latter will be deepened and analyzed in the second chapter. The modernization of medicine is favored by ethics, as a discipline at the base of the nursing profession, and by the conjugation of the psychological dimension of the patient, which allow to abandon the pure technicality to guide the humanization of care. This path is not without challenges and critical issues that the nurse must be able to recognize and face, whether they are technical, welfare or personal. The focus of the third chapter shifts to the investigation of the emotional sphere: of the nurse practitioner working closely with dying patients, of the patient, and of his family. The last chapter, instead, deals with the Italian laws regarding end-of-life choices. The legislation concerning informed consent, Advance Treatment Provisions and Shared Care Planning, is deepened in the interests of respect for: the rights, the dignity, and the will of the patient. To conclude, the issues arising from the clinical case are discussed in the light of the literature analyzed during the thesis, the scientific debate and clinical practice. The PubMed, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Scopus and Google Scholar databases were used for bibliographic research and books on the subject have also been consulted.
