Abstract

The placement of a central venous catheter in a pediatric patient is always an important event from a physical and psychologiacal point of view, both for the patient and for his/her whole family. Depending on the patient’s health situation, and personal needs, specific catheters are chosen. Each catheter has different characteristics, residence times and requires precise treatments and precautions. In particular, in the thesis paper the attention is moved on a specific catheter, the PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters). It is a central venous catheter with peripheral insertion, it is implanted in patients who need special therapies with an expected duration of more than 15 days. This type of catheter is increasingly used in pediatric settings because, compared to central inserted venous catheters, it has fewer complications. The final purpose of the thesis is to highlight the important role of nursing in the care and management of the hospital and therapeutic education for the parents who needs guidance and practical support in the interaction with the new aid of the child at home. Keywords: central venous catheter, PICC, role of nurse, parent caregiver, therapeutic education.
