Abstract

In this thesis the evolution of nursing assistance to a young subject with metastatic melanoma is analysed. It was decided to consider this pathology, since it is spreading increasingly among young adults. According to the latest AIOM estimates, as a matter of fact, until a few years ago, melanoma was considered a rare tumour, even very rare among adolescents; while in the last 20 years, its incidence has increased by over 4% per year among adolescents of both sexes. After an attentive bibliographic review, the absence of cases, in the literature, that focus on the treatment of metastatic melanoma from a nursing point of view could be observed, especially on the management of side effects from chemotherapy and/or management of complications. From the analysis of the studied case, the importance of various aspects that should be taken into serious consideration has emerged: the control of pain, the symptom that comes along with every stage of the pathology. Another important aspect to consider is the risk of infection, because in the early stages of the disease, the patient presents surgical wounds that may not always heal of primary intention; in subsequent stages, however, the adoption of invasive procedures and devices in patient care and assistance is in progressive increase. In the examined case, it is highlighted how the nursing assistance plays a crucial role in the clinical journey and how the training of health professionals is the focal point of the entire diagnostic/therapeutic process.
