Abstract

The marked demographic change, caused by the increasing elderly population and the rise of chronic degenerative diseases, is becoming a major problem for the National Health System across Italy. Changing demands on healthcare have led to the need for a new planning of service delivery models, which are essential to support increasing numbers of older people in the coming years. The availability and reach of Palliative Care services, especially within care homes (CRA), is failing to meet demand, not reaching all the people who have a need for, and might benefit from, them. This study stems from the need to understand what are the professional dynamics that hinder the diffusion of non-oncological Palliative Care within CRA, in particular in the territory of Modena and its Province. Specifically, this thesis investigates how during pre- and postgraduate education health professionals, particularly nurses, have received little formal teaching about end-of-life care. The overall purpose of this contribution is therefore to highlight the need for a more systematic educational plan in Palliative Care through training and consultation efforts, which has the potential to result into an improvement of the quality of care for the elderly population living in CRAs.
