Abstract

Define as “the heroes” of the COVID-19 emergency, HCWs fight in the front lines during this battle, playing a major role and becoming the category most susceptible to contagion. In my thesis I wanted to report the new guidelines that were adopted to contain the spread of the virus and to which each health care worker had to comply changing their work routine. In the first months of the pandemic, the increase in global demand for PPE forced health care workers to optimize and rationalize the use of devices. This last condition caused an increase chance of infection due to improper decontamination reducing the effectiveness of the device. Prolonged use of personal protective equipment also affected the activities performed by health care workers causing physiological and psychological stress that may compromise the ability to provide proper care. The purpose of my thesis is to highlight, through the many studies, international surveys and literature reviews, the recommendations provided by world organizations. In addition, I report some data about the physical and psychological stress to which health care workers have been subjected due to the amount of work, poor training and lack of PPE while providing preventive measures that could reduce the effects of protective devices.
