Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Breast milk is the natural food best suited to the nutritional needs of the newborn, always available, at the right temperature and highly digestible. Breastfeeding is in fact one of the priorities of public health, promoted by both the WHO and UNICEF. PURPOSE: to investigate the self-efficacy of breastfeeding in women, one week, one month and three months after childbirth, taking into account the information received in this regard in pre-partum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: the short self-efficacy breastfeeding questionnaire "Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form" (of 14 items) was administered prospectively to the mothers of the obstetrics ward Obstretic Unit of University of Modena, (from 12 January as of July 31, 2021) through the google modules platform and whatsapp. Investigating this issue after a week, a month and three months from the birth. RESULTS: 210 new mothers answered, of which 128 in all three periods. Using the "Chi-square" test, we assessed the correlation between the responses and the source of the information. The questionnaire also proved its validity on the cohort of Modena mothers. A strong statistical significance (p <0.05) emerged between the improvement in self-efficacy over time and the information activity received before childbirth. DISCUSSION: Qualified team have a fundamental and improving role for the satisfaction and self-efficacy of breastfeeding in primiparas; with the specialist contribution, the new mothers have improved awareness in perceiving the needs, in understanding the correct attachment to the breast and management in everyday life. CONCLUSIONS: early information action has a decisive role in raising awareness, initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding: new mothers who had received more in-depth information before giving birth improved their satisfaction and effectiveness in this practice.
