Abstract

Studies in the field of human error in the operating room show that technical skills are necessary but not sufficient to maintain high levels of performance over time and to safeguard patient safety. The characteristics of the system that cause the clinical risk were then identified, which made it possible to identify what are defined as Nontechnical Skills. Non-technical skills can be divided into a list: situation awareness, decision-making, teamwork, leadership-followership, communication. The latter, represent a set of professional skills that are not born in the health sector, but in the aeronautical field. In the aviation sector they have constituted, and still constitute, one of the most effective forms of transversal training on working groups. The success achieved by this world has not gone unnoticed, in fact other areas, such as healthcare, have believed in and followed this new approach. In particular within the operating room they play a fundamental role in the prevention of adverse events. The scientific evidence identified and the interest in this new management method led to the creation of two important taxonomies: NOTSS (Non Technical Skills for Surgeon) and SPLINTS (Scrub Practitioners List of Intraoperative Non-Technical Skills). These are used to observe and evaluate the performance of operating room operators in order to allow a transparent assessment of training needs and the means to structure the feedback for the development of skills, they also provide a common language to discuss these techniques within the team.
