Abstract

The neonatal sepsis is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in infants with very low birth weight. Sepsis is a serious systemic response of the organism to an infection and is divided into "early" (early-onset sepsis, EOS), when symptoms appear in the first days of life and "late" (late-onset sepsis, LOS) when they occur later . This clinical condition may progress quickly towards septic shock. Septic shock is a serious manifestation of sepsis, which is a life-threatening syndrome characterized by a widespread malfunction of several organs at once. This alteration is due to an excessive and unregulated inflammatory response of the organism in the comparisons of external infectious agents. The recognition of sepsis and Septic shock by healthcare professionals is of paramount importance because it allows the timely application of the appropriate treatment, following a well-defined algorithm capable of improving remarkably prognosis. The purpose of this paper is to want to deepen nursing practice in recognizing the signs and symptoms of sepsis. Infection prevention, sepsis treatment and recognition of a state of septic shock are always current issues that uninterruptedly will present in clinical practice, know them and keep in mind how much it is our role during the assessment is important by choosing a precise algorithm, will allow us to give an increasingly effective assistance.
