Abstract

The kidneys are fundamental organs as they perform the functions of excretion of organic waste, homeostasis of blood pressure, erythropoiesis and control of blood ph. Their malfunctioning gradually leads to chronic renal failure. All patients suffering from chronic renal failure are forced to undergo hemodialysis and/or peritoneal dialysis. The only viable treatment is renal transplantation from a living or cadaveric donor. It was not until the 1980s that renal transplantation began to be successful due to anti-rejection drug therapy. The peak was reached in 2017 with a slight decrease in the years 2017-2019 and even more in 2020 due to the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic. Thanks to the collaboration between the WHO, the Ministry of Health and the I.S.S., the various transplant centers have developed protocols that provide for close monitoring of patients throughout the entire pathway from waiting for transplantation to post- hospitalization follow-up. From October 2021, in order to achieve an adequate immune response, the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine has been introduced in the transplant patient. It is our hope that the synergy between the various figures involved in this activity will guarantee increasingly better results both in terms of percentage and the success of the transplant itself.
