Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore how the Covid 19 pandemic has influenced communication between patient, nurse, and caregiver. The state of emergency associated with the pandemic, has led to restrictions imposed by governments on social and relational life, which resulted in an unexpected change in the ways of communication with patients and their families in all care contexts. The widespread fear among health care personnel due to risk of infection, use of personal protective equipment, and other limitations such as the prohibition of physical contact have negatively impacted the possibility of establishing an empathic and effective therapeutic relationship with patients and caregivers. For the development of this thesis, a literature search was carried out on the databases: PubMed, NCBI, SAGE journals, ScienceDirect and other textbooks on the topic were consulted. The following keywords were used during the research: communication, covid 19, nurse, caregiver, patient. An attempt was made to identify what alternative communication, listening and relationship strategies have been explored and implemented in health care settings and, in particular, by nurses to limit the communication repercussions of the pandemic. Critical issues in the most complex moments of the health emergency were also analyzed. In the last chapter, a semi-structured interview with the caregiver of a patient who was hospitalized in an intensive care unit for months due to his worsening condition after contracting the virus is reported in full. The aim of this interview was to analyze the caregiver’s experience and perceptions regarding communication limitations with health personnel and with her loved one.
