Abstract

The treatment of pain in the newborn and preterm infant has been underestimated for decades due to erroneous beliefs that held that the nociceptive system of this population was not developed enough to function. The most recent scientific evidence supports instead that not only NICU patients are able to perceive pain, but that they feel it in an exasperated way and that the recurrence of the painful stimulus required in the context of life-saving treatments causes permanent changes in the CNS with consequent disabilities. The nurse has a key role in the prevention of pain and all its repercussions on the present and future life of the newborn: he must be able to interpret non-verbal language, properly use the validated scales for pain assessment, apply non-pharmacological preventive techniques and implement the painful procedures within its competence in compliance with the latest indications of the Guidelines for the prevention of pain in new born. This paper is a literature review through bibliographic research carried out on primary databases, such as PubMed and Cinahl, secondary databases, such as Cochrane Library, and by consulting the Guidelines.
