Abstract

The following paper deals with Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC), which is a wound management system that exposes the wound bed to local negative pressure to promote healing. Its use and the mechanism of action have particularly attracted my interest after viewing its application in the clinic. The benefits of VAC therapy include removal of fluid from the extravascular space, improved circulation, increased granulation tissue formation, and increased bacterial clearance. This therapy is constantly used in patients with acute and chronic wounds. The nurse is responsible for wound management in a patient with the VAC system; above all, she must provide constant and personalized assistance to prevent the main signs and symptoms of infection or system malfunction. The treatment of "difficult" wounds represents a phenomenon that assumes great social relevance. For this reason, the nurse must provide useful information to the patient and the care giver to promptly resolve the problem. The effectiveness of VAC Therapy in the context of home care was investigated through the wound closure rate, time to cure and patient experience. However, much can be gleaned from the patient's experience, but the future success of such portable therapy will be measured by the time to cure and thus the cost of effectiveness. The development of portable NPT is an encouraging innovation in wound care technology, and it is possible to extend the benefits to the home care environment. However, this development makes management potentially more advantageous.
