Abstract

Introduction: In an emergency setting, finding vascular access is of fundamental importance if the survival of an individual is to be guaranteed. As venous access is not always easily accessible, a valid alternative is intraosseous access, which allows the administration of fluids and drugs that enter the circulation with a speed similar to a standard venous access. There are several landmarks, with the main ones being: humeral, proximal tibial, distal tibial, and sternal. Objectives: to analyze how well this technique is known and used by the 118 operators of the USL of Modena. Materials and methods: quantitative analytical study using a questionnaire, which was administered to the operators of Modena Soccorso, to assess the knowledge and application of the technique, the principal and most extensive employed insertion sites, and the occurred complications. Results: it emerged that all participants in the research were already aware of intraosseous access, although this device is often not utilized because of inexperience, negligence, lack of material, or due to the fact that venous access is still considered the most effective option. Conclusion: extend the research to other provinces and regions to acquire a broader view on intraosseous access understanding and practice. Propose company training courses instructing operators on performing the procedure correctly, thus ensuring the preparation and safety for the operator using the intraosseous access in emergency settings.
