Abstract

According to the latest data reported by the F.A.I.S, Federation of Associations for Incontinent and Ostomate Patients (2011), in Italy there are more than 74,000 ostomates. Once the critical phase of the intervention is over, the person has to face considerable changes and the impact they have on his quality of life can cause not only physical but also psychological and social discomfort. The alterations that the patient is likely to encounter are various: poor self-perception due to the abrupt change in body image, reduced self-esteem, sexual difficulties and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the aspects that affect the perception of the quality of life of ostomate patients, especially those concerning the physical, psychological and social spheres. The paper also aims to identify educational strategies that allow the nurse to support the patient in his or her rehabilitation journey. Therefore, an accurate bibliographical research was carried out through the main databases (MEDLINE-Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar) selecting articles and studies of the last 10 years that deal with the quality of life of ostomates, focusing on the psycho-social sphere. The first chapter deals with the theme of intestinal ostomies from a theoretical point of view (historical notes, types of ostomy). The second chapter examines the physical, psychological and social well-being of the ostomate, focusing on various important aspects (body image, sexuality, anxiety, rejection, isolation), the third one highlights the importance of the nursing figure in the relationship with the ostomate patient and analyzes the different strategies, traditional and innovative, that they have available to deliver therapeutic education. This is followed by personal considerations and possible implications that may be present in the practice of care.
