Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has been a difficult challenge for mental health, as well as for cases of nutrition and eating disorders which have increased due to a series of factors, which interacting contributed to the emergence of new cases and relapses. The social distancing, the lockdown, the uncertainty of the future, the modification of the daily routine have led to a reorganization of the life of each of us, also affecting the relationship with food and thus increasing the cases of ED. The causes are multifactorial and involve different areas, from the fear of contagion, concern for the future, coexistence with family members and with large quantities of food to social isolation, and this is how food becomes the means to deal with trauma. Another reality to analyze is the world of social media: in this period there has been an increase in the use of online platforms, due to social distancing, and they have both a negative and a positive influence. On the one hand, the spread of the stereotype of the thin woman and the muscular man as an emblem of perfection through online content has a strong impact on the mental mechanisms of those with an eating disorder; on the other hand, the creation of self-help groups, the sharing of stories as an example of overcoming the disease and telemedicine as an alternative and innovative method of treatment are instead positive effects of social media. In support of the thesis, the province of Modena was analyzed, using the annual reports of the DSMDP of the AUSL of Modena from 2018 to 2020, in which the data concerning the use of the eating disorder centers demonstrate a growing trend in the number of patients in charge, demonstrating the fact that in 2020 (with the virus) the numbers have increased. To close the circle, using the NANDA, NIC AND NOC taxonomy, a clinical case was reported from one of the ED centers in the province.
