Abstract

Everyday we are experiencing an increase in the development of colorectal tumor. Major risk-factors are an inappropriate diet and an unhealthy lifestyle. Studies show that a diet based on processed foods, red meat, fats and sugars increasingly enhances the chances of diagnosing cancer, especially if accompanied by tobacco use and poor physical activity. Conversely, the regular adoption of the Mediterranean diet, in combination with physical exercise for a few hours a week, seems to reduce the risk, helping people to live a healthier life. As far as the prevention of this disease is concerned, nurses can take on a major responsibility as health promoters, informing and educating patients about the most suitable diet and healthy lifestyle. They base their knowledge on experience, on what they have learnt during their education, thanks to databases and medical-scientific articles that always provide them with new notions. This gives them the ability to innovate and improve over time, because of the discoveries that are made every day.
