Abstract

It is common opinion to refer to mental illness using stereotyped models. Prejudices arise from the fear of the "different", usually masked with popular beliefs and justifications. The stigmatization of these people has the ability to produce negative effects on the reality of the patient to the point of significantly affecting their quality of life. The goal is to make people understand the importance of disseminating knowledge and informations about mental health and its patients. The topic discussed in the first chapter is stigma: starting from the definition of the word and of the meaning it has gain over time, we focus on the one related to the mental health and the effects it could have when it faces the infirm. In the second chapter, they are defined the different types of stigma and their diffusion: public stigma, wich is the behavior that the population assumes towards of the different; self stigma, that is the internalization of the discriminatory attitudes from the infirm; structural stigma, a dimension belonging to the psychiatry category, in wich is the institution and those who belong to it that are stigmatized. The third chapter defines the rule of the nurse in mental health and how the assistance to a psychiatric patient is based on a helping relationship. An excursus of all the changes will be made even the legislative ones, to see the alternations that have been used for the patient and how the old therapies have affected the diffusion of the stigma. The same chapter also addresses the nurse's role in the fight against the stigma to create a trusted relationship with the patient, who can then ask for help when he needs to. The fourth chapter describes the worldwide anti-stigma projects implemented to minimize the stigma effect on the patient's and his family's life and the campaign implemented in our country.
