Abstract

The incomplete development of a baby who is born prematurely makes him extremely vulnerable to any type of stimulation, therefore, the health professionals who take care of him must have specific knowledge and skills. Over the past few years, the incidence of preterm births has increased significantly in the whole world. Scientific progress has allowed the neonatal area to achieve higher and higher quality of care and therapy, improving outcomes in terms of survival, health and reduction of severe disabilities. However, nowadays these outcomes still depend a lot on the birthplace, because not all settings of care are able to guarantee the adequate level of assistance that these newborns need and are entitled to. The purpose of this thesis is to raise awareness about the existence of the European Standards of Care for Newborn Health which, based on the best scientific evidence currently available, deal with the main issues on which the quality of neonatal care depends, making them accessible to everybody in order to reduce welfare disparities. The role of the nurse and their way of approaching the newborn are crucial in ensuring an optimal quality of care, allowing the child the best possible cognitive, motor, behavioral and relational development. In addition, holistic nursing care that guarantees parental participation and education greatly improves the well-being of both the child and the parents themselves, giving both parts significant benefits in the short and in the long term. Finally, the thesis proposes to formulate, based upon the observations made during the internship, a brief summary about some of the strategies that nurses can implement daily during the care to the newborn, in order to involve parents by placing them at the center of the care together with their child.
