Abstract

Rationale and purpose of the study: the research study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of employed methods with regards to the management of central venous catheters (CVC) in order to prevent care-related device complications. Materials and methods: from November 1st 2020 to the 31st of May 2021, a quantitative analytical study was set up at the Pediatric Oncohematology department of the Modena Polyclinic. The processing of the collected data was carried out through Microsoft Excel software. Main results: out of a total of thirty patients, only one experienced a deviced-related infectious complication, and therefore, the nursing management techniques of the CVC were successful. However, the treatments undergone by the patient who manifested the infectous complication were also analyzed. Conclusions: to ensure the prevention of infectious and mechanical complications, a periodic update regarding the materials and management methods of the central venous access device is necessary. The knowledge of protocols and guidelines for healthcare personnel, caregivers, and for the concerned patients costitutes the most vital resource for preventing adversities and above all, it promotes patient compliance.
