Abstract

Introduction: The Covid19 pandemic has increased the development of burnout syndrome among nurses working mainly in emergency departments, but it could also have affected environments considered more marginal but at the same time involved such as mental health services, given the peculiar entity users and the therapeutic relationship between patients and healthcare personnel. Purpose: the study aims to highlight the possible presence of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced professional fulfillment among the nursing staff of a mental health center, also describing the way in which the ongoing Covid19 pandemic has possibly affected the three dimensions burnout explored through the experiences of the participants. Materials and methods: this study with a mixed qualitative-quantitative method and descriptive data analysis was carried out among all the nursing staff of a mental health center in northern Italy between July 2021 and October 2021, to investigate the possible presence The MBI validated questionnaire was administered for burnout, while a written interview consisting of three open questions was administered to research the influence between the Covid19 pandemic and burnout. The entire survey was submitted to remote participants via the Google Forms platform. Results: The data collected with the MBI questionnaire highlights the presence mainly of moderate levels of emotional exhaustion, high levels of depersonalization and moderate levels of emotional exhaustion. From the qualitative analysis of the interviews, the themes of the sense of emptiness, emotional support, empathy, the right relational distance, advocacy, inadequacy, uncertainty, doubt about professional choice emerge mainly. Conclusions: Results reveal that nurses experienced emotional distress and a moderate risk of developing burnout during the pandemic in the service surveyed.
