Abstract

In recent years, the incidence of individuals struck down by cardiac arrest has been increasing more and more to the point that cardiovascular diseases are, currently, the leading cause of morbidity, disability and mortality worldwide. Cardiac arrest is a major health problem: every year, more than 400.000 people are taken ill with it in Europe, causing numerous deaths if not treated in time. The timely intervention of the rescue, through the maneuvers of "Basic Life Support" (BLS), might lead to the reversibility of this condition and the patient, affected by cardiac arrest, does not run the risk of hypoxic brain injuries that would seriously alter the quality of future life. BLS maneuvers are initial actions offered by trained people to casualties of sudden illness, accident and/or imminent risk of death who can temporarily support impaired vital functions. Performing these maneuvers allows to save time, keeping the person alive while waiting for the emergency services, and/or to increase the probability of a favourable response to subsequent therapies carried out by health professionals or even to solve the problem totally . Cardiac arrest occurs mainly in common places, such as work environments, streets and/or recreational places, and the percentage of people who witness the event and intervene with life-saving maneuvers is on average 58% because they are not sufficiently trained in the execution of the same. Hence the need to provide adequate training to those who are not prepared to perform rescue maneuvers (especially in the case of children). These maneuvers can be understood even in early childhood, to such an extent that we could not identify an ideal age for teaching them. The aim of this paper consists in providing, with the best scientific evidence, the training offered by nurses and health workers on first aid maneuvers for primary and secondary school students.
