Abstract
Play is a fundamental part of child's growth, following him throughout his life and enabling him to relate with the external. In a crucial moment, like hospitalization, play has a higher educational function and becomes an ideal non-pharmacological technique to treat preoperative anxieties and fears, but also postoperative aches and traumas. Nurse is responsible for taking charge child and parents, assuring appropriate care and treatment and focused education, all geared toward patient's physical and mental recovery avoiding trauma from future hospitalizations. Some proposed types of play are used in a clinical case in a pediatric surgery setting to emphasize the value of play during hospitalization.
