Abstract

The use of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) as a nutrient delivery device in the pediatric population is progressively increasing. It consists of a surgical incision which, through the abdominal skin, reaches the stomach. A device that allows the administration of nutritional mixture, fluids and medicines, which cannot be introduced orally, is applied through the surgical opening. It is indicated for several pathological conditions, the most frequent is neurological damage. There are several contraindications: some relative, which require a specific assessment of the case, and others absolute, such as incorrigible coagulopathy or frank peritonitis. Interdisciplinary preoperative care includes a comprehensive assessment of the child and the family, check-ups and education in the management of PEG. In addition, it is essential to include the family within a holistic care pathway, with the aim of informing them, achieving maximum compliance and the best health outcomes for the patient. Parents find it difficult to accept the risks of the procedure and that the convivial moment of the meal is replaced by artificial nutrition. For this reason, it is difficult to decide to make their child undergo it. Postoperative nursing care includes interventions aimed at: the care of peristomal skin; the correct management of devices, enteral nutrition and medicines; the prevention, early recognition and treatment of complications. Finally, it is essential to educate the family for proper coexistence with PEG at home. The evidence analyzed in the thesis were found through bibliographic research on databases such as NICE, PubMed and Trip Medical Database. The keywords used are: “nursing care”, “pediatric patient(s)”, “child(ren)”, “young people” and “percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy”.
