Abstract
The progressive ageing of the population causes a huge increase in chronic degenerative diseases, such as vascular dementia. Despite being the second most frequent form of cognitive impairment, vascular dementia is scarsely known within the population and for this reason it deserves an in-depth study. In fact, it is primarily caused by cardiovascular risk factors that, if properly prevented, allow to slow down its onset. The impact of dementia disease falls mainly on the figure of the family caregiver with possible psychophysical consequences. In order to avoid them, it is necessary to provide comprehensive and early care of the whole family. The aim of this thesis is to inform the population about the best prevention techniques of vascular dementia and to train the caregiver on the most effective management strategies for the patient. The main databases PubMed, UptoDate and Cochrane Library were used, from which primary studies, systematic reviews and guidelines were mainly derived. The keywords used are: "vascular dementia", "vascular cognitive impairment", "multi-infarct dementia", "cerebrovascular disease", "prevention", "caregiver support", "nursing care", joined by the boolean operator AND. The communication tools considered most suitable for the transmission of these indications are two informational brochures: the former on the prevention of vascular dementia and the later on the support for family caregivers.
