Abstract
The external ventricular drain placement is in effect a neurosurgical intervention, being used in case of intracranial pressure monitoring or for the treatment of hydrocephalus. This thesis explores the aspect of the hydrocephalus disorder, highlighting the different types and related causes. This research has been run based on a through review of books and articles within the existing literature collected on the most important databases, including Cinahl, PubMed and UpToDate. The focus of this thesis regards the nursing care for the patient with the external ventricular drain, his physical and neurological evaluation and the management of this device. Through a case report and its planning using NNN taxonomies, I could explore the aspect of the nursing care of the patient, taking into consideration main criticalities in which the patient may incur. The purpose of this thesis is to bring out the figure of the nurse being the first professional in the management of this device, who must pay attention to avoid the related complications such as infections and occlusions that would result in severe neurological damages for the patient. In addition, I believe it is crucial to have an easy access to the most updated protocol complete with the last evidence-based for the management of this device and provide a basic training regarding the management of the liquor drainage to all nurses who are in work on patients with this device. At last, I recall that in case of hospital reorganisations, the nursing care for this kind of patient is not exclusive to neurosurgical unit, but it can be provide in other hospital departments.
