Abstract

This paper investigates nursing care for patients who are victims of burn injuries, taking into consideration two different clinical cases: one pediatric and one adult. Aim of the study is to highlight how the healthcare professional's approach changes according to people care needs, especially in so different kind of patients. In fact, pediatric patient cannot be considered as a small adult because it is not so and his characteristics, from an anatomical as well as physiological point of view, do not allow the same treatment strategies to be adopted. In the first part of this work, it will be exposed the main principles regarding burns, such as pathophysiology, classification and the effects they have on the body both locally and systemically. Patient's diagnostic and therapeutic care pathway will be presented, starting from first aid, going on from the treatment in the urgent emergency phase to the intermediate one and finally to the eventual transfer to a Major Burns Center. The second part will focus on the presentation of two "case reports" and on targeted nursing care, paying particular attention to pain management, the choice of appropriate dressings and the rehabilitation phase which includes follow-up checks and the identification of any psychological and emotional reactions that may arise as a result of a trauma of this magnitude.
