Abstract

Introduction. Noise reduction is the focus of numerous studies that have shown how noise pollution, of various kinds, both environmental and instrumental, can be associated with disorders of various kinds such as: hypertension, heart attack, stroke and even death, in people admitted to hospital. Objective. The aim of this research was to identify the effects of noise on the health of patients and health personnel within the hospital environment, with reference to intensive care units. Method. A scoping review was conducted as a literature review methodology, aimed at taking stock of the state of current knowledge and to direct future research. The Joanna Briggs Institute guide for Scoping Reviews was adopted to conduct the review. All studies published in the last ten years concerning noise pollution and noise sources in hospitals and its effects on health care workers and the entire inpatient population, both adult and pediatric, were considered. Results. Most studies have shown that noise causes direct health consequences for caregivers; however, some research has shown mixed results. Studies of caregivers have found that exposure to hospital noise negatively affects their health and job performance. Conclusions. Noise causes, in hospitalized people, several pathological alterations. The information obtained from the studies analyzed provides precise indications of the repercussions on patients and how small measures are often sufficient to avoid this problem. For health workers, working in a noisy environment represents a risk to their health and increases the probability of error, causing direct consequences on patient care and increasing dissatisfaction with their work. Key words: Hospital noise, noise pollution in hospitals, patients, nurses, healthcare workers.
