Abstract

The subject of this thesis comes from a personal interest in deepening knowledge about some aspects of atrial fibrillation such as treatment and the limitations of clinical practice regarding its management. In the writing of the thesis several databases were consulted such as CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed, UpToDate and Nursing Reference Center Plus together with textbooks and the official website of the Emilia-Romagna region. The keywords used for the search were “atrial fibrillation, management, treatment, adherence therapy, counselling, nursing, risk factors and prevention” with the combination of the boolean operator AND. The literature review showed that atrial fibrillation is a chronic disease condition prevalent in the elderly population worldwide, which, in most cases, has a poor knowledge of the disease that often results in poor adherence to the treatment regimen. This increases the risk of patient exposure to adverse effects such as stroke. In this context, to optimise treatment outcomes, the role of nurses is crucial. They are involved in the process of health literacy, which aims to lead to empowerment, intended as the attainment of the skills and awareness necessary to understand, evaluate and use health information to make decisions. The process of health literacy, which aims to put the patient at the centre of the care pathway, not only has positive effects on the beneficiary of care but it is also useful for the health professional in acquiring knowledge about taking care of the person and the caregiver.
