Abstract

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is significant therapeutic strategy in the treatment of hematological malignancies. The course of treatment of a patient subjected to stem cell transplantation is distinguished by several moments: collection of stem cells, administration of conditioning regimen, transplantation, followed by aplasia and subsequent bone marrow recovery. The patient, during the course, may experience the rise of various toxicities, caused mainly by the infusion of conditioning regimens, consisting of high-dose chemotherapy and/or total body irradiation. This compilation-type assay proposes a review of the literature on toxicities caused by the administration of the conditioning regimen, focusing on oral mucositis. As a result, oral mucositis, in addition to being an extremely frequent condition, has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients undergoing a conditioning regimen. Mucositis is an inflammation that affects the mucosa of the oral cavity and can spread to the entire mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract, causing painful symptoms, oral ulceration, dysphagia and malabsorption, which can cause malnutrition and psychosocial repercussions. The thesis, highlights the active role of the nurse in the prevention, diagnosis, staging and treatment of mucositis, and his educational role aimed at both patients and caregivers.
